LEUNG SHEUNG 梁相 (1918-1978)

Unassuming Excellence
The story of Wing Chun, the renowned Chinese martial art, wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the name Leung Sheung. Despite being Yip Man’s most senior student, Leung Sheung’s modest and humble nature often overshadowed his exceptional abilities. He often credited his sifu (teacher), Yip Man, for his skills, preferring to remain in the background. Despite this, his talent was undeniable, making him one of the most revered among Yip Man’s pupils.
The Origin Story
Born in the city of Ah Yiu in Nan Hoi County, Guangdong Province, Leung Sheung was exposed to the world of traditional Chinese martial arts from a young age. His early training included various kung fu styles such as White Eye-Brow, Choi Lee Fut, and Dragon Style. This initial immersion laid the groundwork for his journey into Wing Chun. He trained under several renowned masters including Yip Gun, Lee Yit, Teng Shui, Wong Cheong, and eventually, Yip Man.
Despite the frequent relocations due to his job, Leung Sheung’s dedication to martial arts remained unwavering. No matter where he was, he made martial arts a priority, learning from different kung fu masters and peers.
His charisma and excellent communication skills led him to the role of the first General Secretary of the newly formed Hong Kong Restaurant Workers’ Union. Here, he encountered an opportunity to further integrate his martial arts passion into his professional life.
A Fortuitous Encounter
The Workers’ Union had a Martial Arts branch, and when a teaching position came up, Leung Sheung was the natural choice due to his lifelong martial arts expertise. Around this time, Yip Man had migrated to Hong Kong, and through a mutual friend, Lee Man, he was introduced to Leung Sheung.
Impressed by Yip Man’s mastery of Wing Chun, Leung Sheung invited him to take up the Union’s teaching position. This decision marked a turning point for Leung Sheung, who then fully committed to studying Wing Chun under Yip Man’s tutelage, leaving behind all his previous martial arts training.
Through Leung Sheung’s and others’ encouragement, Yip Man started teaching Wing Chun publicly, marking the first time this martial art was taught outside the Union. Thus, Wing Chun became established in Hong Kong in the 1950s and began its journey towards international recognition.
Leung Sheung – The Overlooked Master
While many recognize the names of Yip Man and Bruce Lee, Leung Sheung often goes unnoticed despite his significant contributions to Wing Chun. Leung Sheung’s peers and students held him in high esteem, not just for his martial arts skill but also for his innovative teaching methods and practical approach to martial arts.
He was especially renowned for his ability to teach chi sao (sticking hands), a fundamental principle in Wing Chun. Some even referred to him as “the King of Bil Jee” – a testament to his mastery of this martial art.
Even though Leung Sheung has passed away, his spirit lives on, continually shaping and influencing Wing Chun. His contributions to the growth and development of Wing Chun worldwide are immeasurable and will continue to inspire future generations of martial artists.
Remembering Leung Sheung
Leung Sheung’s approach to teaching was encapsulated in his saying, “If you find me, you are lucky.” He believed that the student’s dedication and earnestness to seek knowledge were vital.
To this day, Leung Sheung’s contributions to Wing Chun continue to shape the martial art. His humility, dedication, and belief in practical application remain pillars of his teachings. Above all, Leung Sheung will forever be remembered as the one who helped introduce and promote Yip Man to the Hong Kong community, a step that was instrumental in Wing Chun’s global recognition.
