There are two volumes of the so called “Wing Chun Compendium” book from Shifu Wayne Belonoha. I’ve read nearly half of the first volume, which covers the philosophy of Wing Chun and Siu Nim Tao. I read it as a complement of the beginner course of the Dragon Institute.

In my opinion, it’s a good book. But I’m just a beginner in this martial art. What are your thoughts about the book of this author?

I’ll read the first half of volume 1 myself and let you know, if I can get it at the library. I check out books 1st and then if I think they’re worth keeping, I buy them.

I’m impressed these are real doorstop sized volumes. I bought both in dead trees format years ago (volume 2 right after it was released) but find them too heavy and dry to sit and read from beginning to end. I rebought both volumes as Kindle books, and use them entirely as a reference when looking up applications, names of techniques in Chinese, details of drills etc. I find them very useful in that capacity… not so much as a page turner! 🙂

I have both volumes. I use them as reference books too.

I would highly recommend “The Little Idea” book from The Dragon Institute. There is a monetary cost. Teachings from this book are interwoven throughout The Dragon Institute journey.

    Thanks,

    Mike

You’re right Mike – The Little Idea is the best book for helping you progress through Dragon Family Wing Chun. This one should be you first book recommendation before others.

If you already have The Little Idea book, there are lots of other good books for supplemental reference. Although there will be differences between Dragon Family Wing Chun and The Wing Chun Compendium, it can work as a supplemental reference as Gary mentioned.

For those looking for terms, see our blog post Wing Chun terms. Also, feel free to message me any time!

I have shared several emails with Sifu Wayne… He also signed my copies of the compendium.
