Wing Chun’s Greatest Gift For Business

I have been fortunate through my business to meet some extremely successful people, and I’ve noticed that their collective mindsets have one thing in common that dominates any other trait.

If you were to guess intelligence, determination, responsibility, integrity, creativity, and perseverance you would be correct, BUT this one trait is the supreme linchpin.

This trait accounts for significant flexibility in the others, because as you’ve probably noticed, there are some extremely wealthy people that are not that intelligent, seem to have little integrity, and in some cases have created very little.

I also used to think that it was focus- which is true, but it turns out it is the deeper version of what happens after we focus called CONCENTRATION.

Focus is the ability to direct your attention to a specific task or goal, while concentration is the ability to sustain that focus over a period of time, even amidst distractions.

Hmm…If only there was a way we could “rep” something to improve our concentration?

Yep you guessed it…all of our forms- and the Dummy are the most significant ways we can put this practice and improve it- both in the length of time and as we physically move around.

How many people think of concentrating as they’re moving- to develop this amazing level of concentration and make it stronger? How many other arts or even other “Wing Chun” lineages implement this the way we do?

The next time you wonder “Why am I doing Siu Nim Tao, Chum Kiu, or the Dummy?” Remind yourself of this deep purpose that will bring your success to new levels… and lead you to not give up when things are difficult- this is a gift that gives so much more than it requires!

Here are some quotes to help you…well concentrate on this (c’mon, you know I had to loop it back in there):

“Concentration is the secret of strength” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

“Diversification may preserve wealth, but concentration builds wealth”- Warren Buffet

“Concentration is the root of all the higher abilities in man”- Bruce Lee

This can be added to the relatively short list of universal truths. Thanks for sharing Mark!

Before doing Siu NimTau or Chum Kiu the practicioner has to clear their mind for clarity. This requires some concentration. I think you can improve your concentration by practicing Wing Chun forms.

Yes absolutely! All the elements of good form (shoulders back and down, heavy elbows, light hands, engaged glutes, clamping knees, etc) are things that require constant concentration. The good news is however, just like driving, with enough practice they become subconscious.

Hi Mark. I just read your post about concentration. Oooo…I just did SNT last night uber slow. I had a softly lit diffusor with evergreen essential oil and I turned off all the other lights. I had the soft light and oil scented steam not only for mok lik but also something for my nose! It was a wonderful way to train SNT. One rep took me 30 minutes! HOWEVER, I would lose my concentration every once in a while and second-guess where I was in the form!!! Was that the 2nd fook? Was it the 3rd? In spite of the blips, it was a wonderful way to train and I enjoyed being able to tune out the rest of the world while I focused on my techniques. Because of my level of concentration I found some things I need to work on because it actually gave me time to evaluate my techniques and make corrections! Gonna do that again!
