Are You Distracted Or Focused?

Have you ever found yourself going through some significant challenges in your work or business?

I mean, an abnormally high amount of chaos?

If it seems like right now, arrows are flying at you from all directions, I can relate, and I have something Sifu taught me that will help. I know because I used it again this morning.

    Here it is:

“How FOCUSED can you be right NOW?”

Wing Chun is all about this moment- right now. If our minds drift to things that have happened in the past, or worry about what could happen in the future, we are not living in the now, and we are definitely not focused.

Remember distractions are weakness, focus is POWER. You can not be focused and distracted at the same time.

The next time a major distraction hits you, If you can- right then, do at least the first section of Siu Nim Tao- as slowly and mindfully as you can. Avoid thinking about why you’re doing it, just jump in and do it. Ask yourself “How focused can I be on Siu Nim Tao right now?

Siu Nim Tao can act like “energetic medicine” for you in these moments.

Be grateful with exceptionally large challenges, because they are the best real life pressure test of your focus. There is nothing else out there that allows us to test our limits to this degree in real time.

Anyone can be calm and focused when everything is going well, but how calm can you be in chaos? More importantly, how will you know if you never test yourself this way?

I’m not saying this is easy by any means, but with practice it will get better, and when you come back to your ‘outer world’, you will have more clarity and power- and future challenges will be measurably easier to deal with.

I will take your suggestion and in the next few weeks I will provide feedback to everybody on the results.

I said I’d report back. Each morning I roll out of bed, pray/meditate, do forms, and stretch, in that order. I think the common denominator between meditative prayer and forms is breathing. I focus on my breathing and by extension on my inner self.

So, I have indeed performed Sil Nim Tao during the day. Standing back and detaching from a situation and putting it in perspective, then slowing my breathing while meditating helps in high-stress situation. Sil Nim Tao has been a variation of that.

The other day I mowed the lawn before a Wing Chun workout. I used the work as a warm-up. I’m older than most so I tire easier. As a result, I struggled through the forms, Siu Nim Tao, Chum Kiu, and the Mook Jong. The fatigue caused me to miss movements in the forms. I decided to move forward in the workout because I knew it was fatigue. There are going to be times when I’m exhausted but by continuing the workout I’m learning to persevere through fatigue and to finish my goals. It may not be a 100% result, but it is an 80% result. I chalked it up as a win. Hope this helps in the discussion. Thanks!

Thank you Mike. Your mind controls everything. The times when you are tired are the BEST times to test your mental strength. Thank you for sharing!

My son was an MMA fighter and later co-owned a gym. He said that he would have older people or moms who put on weight after having kids. Sometimes these people weren’t feeling it and he suspected that is why they weren’t showing up. So, he gave a talk to every new gym member and said sometimes you fear just “going through the motions” but show up anyway. His philosophy is that yes, you MAY sometimes find yourself going through the motions or half-assing it. No, that isn’t acceptable but realistically it happens. But just show up. Show up and the rest of it will take care of itself. He told those moms it’s ok to just shuffle on in sipping their coffee and chatting with their friends if they choose. Just be there no matter what. Show up consistently and it will all fall into place. Over time they will up their game and get the work done.

I myself am 63. I can gradually lose my reflexes and strength, but by God nobody can take away my commitment. I own it.

Hi Mark, So….I know this group is supposed to be business related, but much of what we talk about can also apply on a personal level. There is plenty of chaos in business, but there is also more than enough in personal relationships. And, being a retiree, this is where my chaos lies. Been there-done that chaos thing on a professional level and after 40 years I finally found the strength to say “I don’t need this” and I left my employer. I’m working on finding this same strength in my personal relationships….trying to surround myself with the people who bring me peace and joy. Wing Chun helps me find an inner peace that carries out into my daily life. It is helping me to stay calm in situations that might otherwise bring more chaos than good. To quote my sister, “If it isn’t good, I’m not going to do it”. Wing Chun is good!.

Yep, life is meant to happen for you, not to you.
