Discipline

    Discipline isn’t a chore-it’s a choice.

A chore is something you force yourself to do because you have to.

Discipline is something you train yourself to do because you choose to.

    The difference? Mindset.

A weak mindset see discipline as a burden.

A strong mindset sees discipline as freedom—the ability to control yourself instead of being controlled by laziness, procrastination, distractions, or emotions.

Discipline isn’t about suffering through something boring. It’s about owning your mind and becoming the kind of person who does what strong-minded people do—no matter how you feel. That’s real power.

As you guys may know, Siu Nim Tao is what we refer to as the “Ritual of the Warrior” (aka our daily practice). Of course we can practice more, but this should be the minimum of what we do in our pursuit of the warrior’s life. That’s why we have the Discipline Coin. It is a token of our dedication to ourselves and who we choose to be and what we are becoming through that choice.

The obvious goal is to train daily and successfully complete the quiz, but of course those are minimal. If that is all I do I can become a mechanical Wing Chun robot and just check off the boxes.

So, I will identify a way to add extra value each week. THIS week my extra goal is smoothness. In addition to staying in sync with the metronome, I will smoothly and efficiently move through the process. I am currently jerky and awkward.

As soon as I think I have sufficiently improved in this area I will set another extra goal, above and beyond the basic curricular requirements. I will report on it here.

I have been involved in Martial arts since 1972… when I began my goal it was to learn cool Kung Fu moves like Bruce Lee and David Caradine on the Kung Fu TV series….

These goals were replaced many decades, fat lips and bruises ago. It is simply part of me, like my name. I stopped doing KF along time ago… it is simply me now…

I recall a mentor of mine say that if you enjoy what you do you will never have to work another day in your life….

Regardless of my activity throughout the day my mind goes back to the Art…

Don’t do Kung Fu…. Be Kung Fu.
