Developing and Adapting my “At-Home, Solo Training Plan”
Hello everyone!
Let me begin by saying that I hope you’re all having a wonderful day and had a great weekend!
I currently have a regular WC training plan that I’ve been following daily, which consists of (2) different workouts. These are those 2 workouts amd theor respective Names/Titles:
“Daily WC Solo Training Routine 1”
– Warm-Ups (approx. 5 mins.)
– Siu Nim Tau (approx. 7 mins.)
– Chum Kiu (approx. 5 mins.)
– Bil Jee (approx. 4 mins.)
– Da’s (Wu, Tan, Boat, Guat, Goang/30x each – 10 slow,10 med., 10 fast) (approx. 2 mins.)
– Angle Drill (AASS, SSAA, SSSS, AAAA/ 2x each/ both sides) (approx. 2 mins.)
– 4-Directional Footwork (approx. 3 mins.)
– Dragon Walk (across room 2x) (approx. 5 mins.)
– Dummy 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 (approx. 2 mins.)
AND
“Daily WC Solo Training Routine 2”
– Warm-Ups (approx. 5 mins.)
– Siu Nim Tau (approx. 7 mins.)
– Chum Kiu (approx. 5 mins.)
– Bil Jee (approx. 4 mins.)
– Chain Punches: Fuk (over) and Tan (under) based (10x each, 4 speeds: slow to fast/approx. 2 mins.)
– 1-2-1 Drill (4x) (approx. 1 min.)
– Leg Raises (x15 each side) (approx. 1 min.)
– Dragon Ball (4x) (approx. 5 mins.)
– Dummy 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 (approx. 2 mins.)
I found that the consostent practice of these two routines each day (I alternate them each day) has really helped me to get back into my Wing Chun mindset, practice and balance.
I feel like I did when I was attending weekly classes regularly……the moves, and my ability to perform them correctly, are coming naturally, and increasingly more refined with each passing day. As I’m sure you students know, the more you do this, “the more it becomes a part of you”, and that’s what’s happening again for me now.. it’s a beautiful thing!
So this brings me to the subject of this writing.
This morning we’re having my coffee and getting ready to do one of my 2 Solo Training workouts, I noticed a social media post that was made by Karl Godwin, where it detailed Sifu Ben Der’s training program/regimen, which according to many of the commenters who apparently are or were students of him, has not changed at all since the beginning. But what captivated me about it was that I saw exercises in there that I remember doing back when I first started with the dragon things I hadn’t done in a long time. This got me thinking that I need to expand my training/practice to moree effectively challenge my learning abilities, the way Sifu Adam did it, and I believe still does in his classes.
That said, I decided to add a “3rd” WC workout (and likely a 4th sometime in the future), with a cemetery different set of “drills/exercises”.
My ultimate goal is to be doing “most all of what we do” regularly/daily/consistently.
When I think about it, it’s probably just what Sifu had us doing in class back in Dana Point, and what the Dragon classes do: “perform various and different drills/practice each day” to keep you balanced and sharp. I guess I didn’t realize that what I was actually doing was basically emulating his class protocol,..but I suppose thats a good thing….after all,….when it comes to teaching Wing Chun, he truly knows what’s best!
I hope you found this article enlightening, informative, and hopefully, helpful.
Have a great day!
Ruben
