So What, Now What?

At The Dragon Institute, we live by the mentality of “So What, Now What?”

    • You hit a breakthrough? So what, now what?
Don’t get cocky. Stay grounded and keep building.

    • You stumbled in training? So what, now what?
Don’t sulk. Adjust, learn, and get back at it.

    • You missed practice or feel stuck? So what, now what?
Don’t waste energy on regret. Focus on what you can do right now.

Much of what we do is about freeing ourselves from carrying the weight of things… whether that’s someone else’s force or weight, or the weight of our past successes and failures.

This mindset frees you from being chained to the past. It reminds you that neither the highs nor the lows define you… your response does.

When you train your mind to answer “So what, now what?”, you stop being ruled by circumstance and start ruling yourself.

That’s the discipline of Dragon Family Wing Chun.
That’s the mentality of The Dragon Institute.

I like that attitude of “So What, Now What”. It keeps you in the moment, or mindfulness. The past is the past, and the future is not here yet. It is only this moment now.

    Thank you Sifu

I agree and appreciate the nugget of wisdom behind this mindset. I keep reminding myself that I don’t have to practice -“I get to practice.”

“So What, Now What?” – “I get to practice.”

I tell my son all the time that it’s all about how you respond. We’re all going to have ups and downs. We are all going to mess up. We are all going to fall short of our goals. As you say….So what, Now what? Move forward! We can’t change the past, but we can learn from it and do something NOW to shine a light on our future. I also tell my son that when he gets angry or nervous or scared or frustrated…these are all normal feelings. It’s what we do with those feelings that shows us who we really are.

I love this attitude. With a busy schedule and a minor knee injury, it’s nice to know even though I can’t do Jackie Chan moves I can still do plenty.
