What tends to go through your mind during practice?

So, last week, we talked about tunes during practice. This week, I had another thought about practice. We all aim for a still mind in both practice and application–the universe surrenders to a still mind after all–but it takes us all time to reach that point. Some more than others. This is a journey though, and the journey is just as, if not more important than the destination. Practice is a good time to have, for lack of a better phrase, shower thoughts. Have you had any of these practice shower thoughts?

I’ve been practicing over 12 years now, and one of mine was of the struggle I have in calming my mind down. Some folks here know me, and they know some of my own struggles I’ve shared with them. Anxiety is a big struggle of mine. It’s a constant ‘living in the future,’ full of “Well what if this” sorts of thoughts. The practice thought I had, and this is going to sound pretty basic (possibly?) was that practice time is my time. It’s for me. It’s my time to myself, which has been incredibly important in this past year alone.

So I ask again, what are your practice thoughts?

Also, bit of a side note here, I’m thinking of giving these weekly posts a name. I’ve got “Thoughtful Thursday,” but if any of you have ideas, throw them in here too.

I try to keep my mind quiet and empty, but like most people in this fastpassed world it is hard at times.

I find if I get distracted by thoughts other than my Siu Nim Tao or Mook jong practice I start messing up and have to start over again. So I try very hard to be in the moment.

    Good question. Keep them coming.

Like the race car driver … I focus on where I am going or my objective. No what if’s. Practice creates muscle memory so that my actions happen on their own.

If my objective is engaging lats, I feel my lats. I determine my point of focus and then focus my mind on that only…..

I was told once that the Universe abhores a vacuum…. I love what Bruce Lee said in Enter the Dragon… “Don’t think feel.”

I second Chuck’s thoughts. I live in the moment when training. Whatever the objective maybe there i am, this Principle is everywhere in my life.

    Keep up the great work!

I should clarify here: these practice thoughts flow, I don’t really focus on pondering them. That’s why I figure that calling them “shower thoughts” would be apt, since a lot of shower thoughts flow into the mind.

That being said, I’ve also had days where I was focusing on something too. Sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose.

I ask myself the “Is it really impossible?” question. This originally came from weight training, when the reps were getting difficult. I would ask myself “Is it really impossible to get one more rep?” I found this transfers nicely into Wing Chun. “Is it really impossible to get my scapula any lower, extend my Tan Sao any further?”,Etc. This allows me to focus on one thing at a time and refine it, to then ultimately bring it back into the collection of things we engage at once. Good to hear from you Dustin. I miss our Yoda vs Grover debates! Haha 🙂

I also have issues with quiting the mind. My mind is always thinking about work, wife, children, grandchildren, and hobbies amd chores. To quite my mind, when I practice, I first think of each movement, then I focus on my breathing while doing the movements. Focusing on my breathing feeling like I’m going into meditation.
