Thoughtful Thursdays: Training Elsewhere

    Hey folks,

First off, sorry for the lapse last week. Had a really busy week overall. Without further ado…

There are times when we all won’t be in our usual training spots. Those spots become very familiar, like home in a way. I can’t speak for everyone else here, but whenever I train somewhere that isn’t my usual spot, I notice differences. Things feel different with some of my training. It could be a different floor, a crowded area, vacation spot, I think you get my point.

I remember the first time this happened to me, I was visiting family over in Pennsylvania. I couldn’t help but notice how the hardwood floor there felt so different to my usual (at the time) training spot. Then there was also the pitbull-boxer mix dog barking at me as I did my Siu Nim Tao (don’t worry, it was playful barking.) The hardwood floor though–that was interesting because it made my SNT feel different. More challenging.

Is this something you notice? If so, is it something that has influenced your training in some way?

    Hi Dustin,

Yes, I travel a lot so I’ve noticed this as well. Different locations can lend to distractions. I think the key take away is that you still train on your vacations and when not in your comfort zone, so that speaks volumes to your dedication. Keep up the hard work!

I just started my training last Monday, but last weekend we were traveling and in a hotel. It was not ideal, but I did exactly as Charles and did my work in the bathroom in front of the mirror. I have a mirror in my Office where I typically train and that definitely helps. I can watch my form and make sure I correct the details as I train.

Interesting, because I trained at another location for the first time yesterday. It took me 40 minutes to get there and It was outdoors and there were little gnats and or mosquitos. The concrete did feel different than the tiled area I usually work on and my feet did not pivot as well. I went there because an old friend invited me as we have sparred with gloves and headgear in the past at my house. I used the distraction of the bugs to see if I could keep focused and finish whatever I was practicing to completion. I was a bit more fatigued than usual as the drive and different environment used additional energy. I was looking forward to today’s practice in the comfort of my own area.

I don’t mean to be too long here but when I see the pics and videos of the Dragon Institute, I find myself wishing I could train there and believe I would be just as at home there as my own area.

    • Yes, training in other places is very distracting and sometimes difficult for me also. I sometimes house sit for my friends when they go out of town. Their house is very crowded and does not have lots of room and they also have a dog who barks and whines when I’m working out. I just do the best I can and stay true to my practice routine.

I agree Dustin , That is my main concern why I do not travel. I try to make my Practice room like a mini

Training in different places is my normal routine. I am a student of Moy Tung Ving Tsun Kung Fu in Fredericksburg, VA. Unfortunately, since I work in Maryland I am unable to make it to class during the week, so I got permission from both Sifus to train with the Montgomery County Kung Fu in Gaithersburg, MD during the week. On the weekends I train in my home Kwoon in the basement, or at various parks in Fredericksburg, VA.

I find training in different places make it more realistic training, as you typically can not choose where confrontations will happen, and you should be able to perform in any location.

    Regards, Doc
