Thoughtful Thursdays: The Elements of Good Form

Hey folks, it’s Thursday again. Time for another thoughtful post.

I’ve got the elements of good form on the mind today–specifically, my strength and my weakness. I’ve always felt pretty good about my Mok Lik, while Kim Sut has been an ever constant struggle. Kim Sut winds up being a culprit in a number of blunders for me. It can be tricky to remember the knees, but hey, that’s part of the process.

What’s an element of good form you consider your strength, and what’s an element of good form you consider needing the most work to improve?

The exercise of putting the block between the knees and using a wall beam or door jam has helped me with my Kim Sut. My Ting Yiu sometimes will evaporate 2/3 into my Siu Nim Tao, before I correct. I video taped my Wooden Dummy #10 and noticed I had a slight slouch which kept putting me on my toes when I ended so again I am working on that and noticed improvement. The first arm roll in Chum Kiu would be a challenge but Sifu gives us good tips on how to practice a form that might be challenging (like the block).

    Good topic

    Hey Dustin,

Thursday already? Time flies when you’re having fun! 😀 Good topic this week, as usual!

Things I’m bad at? Bandwidth is still too low to make sure I do all the things I want my body to do during forms, if I notice something needs correcting and focus on it, then something else will be off, so I focus on fixing that and then another thing goes askew.

Things I’m good at? My bandwidth has definitely increased some during my time at Dragon Institute so I surrender to the process, and maintain a daily practice and enjoy the steady improvements along the way.

Another thing I’m bad at? Making a proper routine… I wish I could get up at the same time every day, and devote a solid hour to practice. Sometimes I succeed, other times I get up late, or wake up still tired and my practice slips into the afternoon, or the evening. Sometimes I get a solid hour, sometimes I grab 15mins here and there through the day.

Finishing on a high note: I do keep a log of my practice, and I feel like I’m organizing how I spend my practice time to find and work on my weak points!
