Intro and Looking for Practice Recommendations

Good day Dragon Family. I am just starting my Wing Chun journey, and I am in day 2. I will say first off that I am so excited to be trying this. I am 48 years old husband and father of 2, and this style has fascinated me most of my life. I am finally committing myself to this journey.

I am not able to obtain a wooden dummy until after the first of the year, but I wanted to get my New Years Resolution started early this year. I want 2026 to be a year of growth and this is my starting point. Does anyone have recommendations for practicing without a wooden dummy? I am mimicking the movements and if that is good enough for now that is awesome, but if anyone has any recommendations I am definitely open to trying anything.

Welcome Josh! I would say that air dummy is fine for now until you can get one. I have seen other members on here mention making something out of PVC pipe that worked pretty well, so hopefully others will chime in with their ideas and suggestions. But, it is beneficial to practice both ways (air and wooden dummy), even once you get one, you should still practice in the air from time to time. They do make portable arms I’ve seen on Amazon that you can strap to a tree, that is cheaper than buying a dummy. That might be a good temporary solution for you. Hope this helps.

    Happy Training!

Hey Josh, I am new my self. Only 4 months in. I have been practicing in the air and its better than not practicing. Try to get in at least 30 mins a day. But nothing beats a wooden dummy. I did try to the one from Amazon. However I sent it back. I am in this for the long run and decided to spend a little more and go to warrior martial arts. My dummy actually comes in next week. It is more expensive so heed that warning. Im 55 and started Wing Chun, because I can relate to the science behind it with the center line and the efficiency. My goal is to become a SIFU sometime in future after I retire. Im approaching my Wing Chun from the view point of I want to master it but never have to use it.

HAHAHA Funny that you mention this. I was wondering if this was one of those things I may try to do in retirement. I at least will continue to practice.

Hi Josh. Welcome. I agree with the others. If a Mook Yan Jong is not in the budget now don’t worry. The important thing is to be diligent in your practice. I personally commit at least 90 min a day to practice. I know a lot of people can’t commit that much time due to family, work and other commitments. Do the best you can. The important thing is to practice with what you have. Enjoy the journey.

    Hello Josh,

I’m in the same boat as you without a dummy. I practice the air dummy everyday with a punching bag and use the bag seam as my centerline. I also practice on random trees in my neighborhood.

Keep up the good work and welcome to the Dragon family.

All the best for 2025 and 2026

Hi Josh, I purchased 3- extensions/arms and leg extension on Amazon for $150. Found someone with old telephone pole and cut it down size and mounted items to it. Works pretty well. Don’t look greates need to sand and finishing the pile.
