Assuming Vs Knowing

  • Posted by Mark on 07/03/2025 at 11:00 AM

I was training with Sifu the other day and he noticed spots where I was hesitating to move in. I felt like I had belief, but it wasn’t completely showing up under pressure. He said “You need to KNOW your Wing Chun so well that you’re aware of the obstacles I give you, but you are not distracted by them.” I said “Oh, so it’s like assuming I can get in anyway?” and he said “NO, you need to treat it as a FACT,” I realized that I was thinking that assuming and knowing were similar- energetically. I was wrong.

Check out the differences- particularly the confidence level of each:

    Assuming

Definition: Believing something is true without having definite proof.

Based on: Guesswork, intuition, past experience, or limited information.

    Confidence Level: Medium to low.

Example: “I assume she’s running late because of traffic.”(You don’t know for sure, but it seems likely.)

    Knowing

Definition: Being certain that something is true because you have firsthand experience.

Based on: Facts, observation, verification, or reliable sources.

    Confidence Level: High.

Example: “I know she’s running late because she just texted me.” (You have direct confirmation.)

This really helped me make this a “black or white” or “true or false” understanding. Bring KNOWING into your Wing Chun by practicing the reps at home while being mindful of your own high level elements. Observe exactly how you feel- are you knowing and do you feel solid and certain? If not, change something until it’s ABSOLUTE. This takes a high level of honesty that gets better with more reps. Finally, use your class time or time with Sifu to verify what you know. This is a gradual process based on your own internal beliefs, and it may take more time than you think- Trust me, I know because I’m still going through it!

Excellent way to summarize another Wing Chun concept – that has so many applications/implications for life in general! The world can work so much better………

    Thanks for sharing this Mark!

Agreed,,,, water being poured just flows around an obstacle in one continuous movement without the need for thought or consideration…. hence contact reflex development “don’t think,,,, feel”

I understand this in the practice of Wing Chun for sure. If we extrapolate and apply this to life, well, feeling is sometimes bad. Thoughtful consideration may be better. I just pose this so you or some of the respondents here can expand on this as a philosophy for life. I am not disagreeing, just delving into this further.

Yes, all of us have different lenses due to our unique previous experiences. So some argue that our perceptions create our reality. But I believe there’s more to it, because people have given their lives for something they believed in strongly enough- which is definitely in the “knowing” category. Sifu speaks of being willing to die (to your old self) to become Wing Chun, and I agree that is truly the only path- Not easy, but as William Wallace stated: “Everyone dies, but not everyone lives.” I had to through in a Braveheart quote 🙂

    Okay.. he’s a quick one for you…

What’s the difference between a literalist and a kleptomaniac?

    The Literalist “takes things literally”…

    The Kleptomaniac “takes things”.,.. literally!

I may have told you this morning I’m sure you know it but I believe it goes like this:

“A child once asked me,…’What does it mean when it rains?’…

I replied, ‘It means God is crying’,…

He asked, ‘Why is God crying?’..

I said, ‘Probably because of something ‘you’ did”
