Pulling back Tan Sau too far

One thing I’ve noticed is that whether or not you are trying to tan sao, if you let yourself get into “cho kiu” (elbows too close to your body) it’s almost impossible to prevent someone from trapping that arm behind the other one… leaving you with one effective arm less than your attacker.

yes, I also say the same thing, plus your structure will be weak/incorrect.

    Hey Mike!

The guys make some good points….the Dragon crowd is a good one for sure!

My thought on you question is simply that if your elbow is too far back (I feel in “pretty much any” posture, but specifically with the Tan as your question queries), you lose structure and you “can be collapsed into yourself”…. and that’s a huge and fundamental no no.

I peronally haven’t had issues with trapping so much, I feel that as long as you don’t “leave your hands” too close together for any extended period of time, I feel that you can avoid that trap (no pun intended! Lol)

And not to sound like a broken record lol, but I feel that the Dragon Wing Chun Concepts address this succinctly in “The Golden Rules” concept.

I hope this is helpful. Feel free to reach out to me anytime if you have any other questions, in always happy to help! 😃
