Understanding Jeet Kune Do
Jeet Kune Do (JKD) is a philosophy of fighting concepts created by Bruce Lee. It is not a formalized approach to fighting, instead its a philosophy meant to free people from techniques and other limitations mental and physical limitations. He wanted to create an approach that could unite people of all different backgrounds. He also wanted to inspire people to trust more in themselves in order to help them understand that fighting is not a pattern or a routine rigid approach. That it is alive. And only through aliveness will you ever be able to make fighting work for you.

We are happy to be able to teach the concepts of Jeet Kune Do in our Palm Coast martial arts classes. Our classes specialize in teaching students of all ages how to apply Bruce Lee’s concepts and philosophy with distinct preference for simplicity and efficiency. Although we call our classes, Wing Chun Kung Fu, the concepts and the philosophy of Bruce Lee and Jeet Kune Do are very much a part of our teachings.

Our approach to Jeet Kune Do (JKD) is not as a style. Bruce Lee never meant Jeet Kune Do to be. Instead, our Jeet Kune Do approach is a philosophy and set of concepts that are not limited by traditions such as range, appearances or techniques. Although the nuts and bolts of Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do was Wing Chun, unlike other Wing Chun schools we emphasize different ranges of combat and students of The Dragon Institute are taught to confidently flow from long-distance through middle distance and into close quarters. Our approach is fluid and dynamic with adaptable footwork. Longer ranges prioritize mobility for quick movement or evasion and closer ranges prioritizes structural stability and occupation of the centerline. The movements are smooth and efficient, utilizing the most direct lines and angles. This affords students a way to effectively pursue the most direct and efficient line of attack.
Another important aspect of The Dragon Institute is its community. The school has a vibrant and supportive community of students and instructors who share a common love for what we do and a commitment to excellence. This community (called the Dragon Family) helps students to feel connected and motivated, and provides opportunities for social interaction and friendship.
