Wooden Dummy Height

  • Posted by Jesse on 05/29/2026 at 8:23 PM

    Hello!

My wooden dummy comes with several shims under it that can be used to adjust the height. I currently have them on and the arms are about even with my shoulders. I have two questions.

    1. What is the general rule of where the height of the dummy should be in relation to your height?

    2. What are the pros/cons of having the dummy set a bit higher? I’m only 5’5″ and will likely be dealing with taller opponents generally speaking. Does it make sense to train with it higher as that’s the likely real world scenario, or should I bring it lower to make practicing more practical?

    Thanks!

    <div>Hi Jesse.</div>

Sifu, I’m the same height as Jesse so I’m curious about training to fight taller opponents as well.

Jesse, I had wondered the same thing about training with the Dummy and Sifu has a wonderful video on how to make it the right height for each user. The link is below. I’m thinking when it comes to taller opponents that some Wing Chun techniques will bring them forward (thereby making them “shorter”). And, the taller person’s techniques will need to be lower to get to a shorter person, so our techniques fit us as opposed to the opponent anyway. However, since our goal is the opponent’s centerline, I’m not really sure how “important” someone’s height really is. Another thought (I’m thinking about all this as I’m typing!)…the three dummy arms and the leg represent energy pathways rather than actual body parts. So, I’m not really sure the opponent’s actual height really comes into play. For example, if he’s shooting in to grab your legs, it doesn’t matter how tall he is! I could be way off base, though, so I defer to Sifu!

I appreciate you linking that video, that’s actually really helpful and insightful along with your comments. Stay rooted and focus on your technique.

Though ironically, Sifu mentions having the dummy arms at mid chest level, but the thumbnail shows (I think anyway) Ip Man with the arms at shoulder/neck level. Though naturally both of them are more experienced than my week or so of training 😀

But I 100% am with you Deb, I would love to learn more about how to practice/prepare for interactions with taller people

Glad you shared the video @Deb . I was going to share that one too. One of the main reasons your dummy needs to be this height is for your development of staying structured and rooted. Practicing on a dummy that’s to high for you will force you to loose structure and root. You need structure and root regardless of the height of the person you’re fighting.

In closer range, stay low. But I’ll have to make a video about fighting taller people at longer range. We have a certain leaning back approach there.
