Training with a pacemaker

    Hi all,

In July 2024, I had a pacemaker implanted due to electrical issues with my heart (AV block) unbeknownst to me at the time (I am 64). After watching Sifu’s “Dragon Family Wing Chun: How It’s Different”, it got me thinking about how completely and effectively I could train in Wing Chun since sparring is not advisable. In the near term it may be a mute point since I am learning alone at home (though I hope that may change even if it’s in the form of occasional trips to FL). However, I still wonder whether it’s possible to still be able to gain proficiency (with respect to self defense) without such an integral and important part of the process for real world experience and application.

I am thankful for any thoughts others in the community might have regarding this.

P.S. I just enrolled in the online school this month.

    Hey Jim,

Welcome! I will be blunt here: nothing can replace being able to spar with another person. But, a lot of us here make do. There are students here who, while taking the practice very seriously for self-defense, also take up this art with the primary goal of self-improvement. It is absolutely possible to gain some proficiency without sparring, however, you do miss out on some aspects that are much easier to understand when you’re touching hands with someone else.

There’s a saying that we use here: “Harmonize with the obstacle.”

Jim, the fact that you’re taking a step towards a better self is extraordinary alone. I am also an online student practicing often in my free time. I don’t have anyone to spar with either so my main focus is a good foundation and balanced mind. I must say though I am a bit spoiled, I practice traditional Okinawan Karate at a local dojo so I do spar but in a different martial arts. My father is 64 and has joined me in my journey of pursuing knowledge in martial arts and I have seen a huge improvement in his physical and mental health. Anyway, I wish nothing but the best for you Jim and hope you find fulfillment in this journey you’re taking..

    Hi Jim and Welcome!

I am SOOOOO proud of you for becoming part of our Dragon Family! Although Wing Chun is indeed a martial art, sparring is not the end-all, be-all. There is so much more! You will become strong on the “outside”, but will also find strength on the “inside”, although it sounds like your internal strength already shines! In addition to strength, this art offers peace and harmony. You will not only learn the art, you will learn about yourself – physically, mentally and spiritually. And, you will have so much support from the Dragon Family members. Go at your own pace and always be willing to ask any questions you might have. Glad to have you with us! 🙂

Welcome to the family! Thanks for sharing here.

Development in Wing Chun takes time, first you need a strong foundation. Solo training is where this is built. But you’ll need hands-on training eventually to make it functional.

I recommend yearly trips to train with me in Florida. Others students are doing this and making real progress.

I also recommend starting a study group in your area. This gives you people to mentor in the process as well as training partners. Meet a couple times a week.

      Sifu,

Could you please share some information about the setting up study groups.

      Thank you!

      Sifu,

How long do visiting students typically come for? Do they do group classes, private lessons, both?

      Thanks.

Here are a few options. But all is of course customizable.

Option 1: The Weekend Private Lessons Only

Fly in Thursday or Friday, fly out Sunday. Private lessons each morning you’re here.

        Option 2: The Long Weekend

Fly in Wednesday or early Thursday, fly out Sunday morning. Train with the group Wednesday or Thursday night at 6:30, then private lessons Friday and Saturday mornings. This gives a a taste of the group energy and the one-on-one work.

        Option 3: The Full Week

Saturday through Sunday of the next week. Private lessons in the mornings, group classes Mon – Thurs evenings.

    Welcome Jim!

I am an online-only student right now as well. I have been studying for almost 6 months. It has been a fantastic experience. I hear you on not having anyone to practice with, but honestly, the first several months really are about building that foundation and learning the terminology and how to root your body.

I highly recommend focusing on Siu Nim Tao. It has so many benefits both physical and mental. Also, don’t skip warmups. 🙂 Welcome to the family, I hope you find it as welcoming and supportive as I do.
