The Billy Program
Posted by Sifu Adam on 03/23/2025 at 7:54 PMUPDATE: The following info is outdated. The Billy Program now has its own page: The Billy Program.
….
Want to hold yourself (and others) accountable for training daily???
Introducing “The Billy Program”
A “Billy” is an accountabilla-buddy (a fellow student) that looks out for you and holds you accountable. Not to baby you, but instead to make sure you stay disciplined and don’t slack.
Step 1: Billy Up
-
Just post: “I’m looking to Billy Up and looking for someone to connect with. Once someone replies, message each other directly outside this group to team up.
Step 2: Billies Team Up By Being on the Same Page
-
Get each other’s phone number and email
-
Agree on your training goal (keep it simple)
-
How often you’ll check in (daily, 2–3x a week, once a week)
Step 3: Stick to It
-
Ask each other: “Did you train today?”
-
Be honest. No BS. If you missed it, say so.
-
If your Billy disappears or flakes out, find another. No weak links.
Billy Code
- Check in regularly. No disappearing acts.
- Set Clear Goals – Keep it simple. A clear training commitment to yourself and to your buddy.
- Check In – Ask your buddy “Did you train today?” No excuses.
- Call It Out – If your Billy skips training, hold them accountable.
- Stay Consistent – If your Billy disappears, find a new one. No weak links.
- Commit – If you agree to be a Billy, show up. No half-measures.
- Be Honest – Don’t lie about your training. If you slacked, own it.
- No Babysitting – Your Billy isn’t your coach. They won’t force you to train—you have to want it.
- Respect the Process – This isn’t a gimmick. It’s about building discipline, character, and resilience.
- Call Out Weakness – A Billy who lets you slide isn’t doing their job. Expect to be pushed.

Love it!
I’d like a reciprocal billy-ee and billy-er! I tend to train after work (MST) so I’ll refer to yesterday’s work out for myself since I try to be mostly off-line after dinner.

Yesterday, spent about 30mins in the garage: I went through Sheung Leung Siu Lim Tau learned so far, Mook Jong Set 10, and 5 Da’s drill several times each.

Had an awesome workout yesterday! Spent more than 30 minutes with the metronome at 60bpm on the Jong, and can now make it all the way through the left side of the 010 set. Right side needs more work though. Also continued with 5 Da drills and Siu Lim Tau practice afterwards.
Back at work today, but looking forward to more practice tonight to make sure I haven’t regressed since yesterday.

Success! After a very relaxing hour of practice yesterday, I can now reliably make it through set 010 on the Jong with a 60bps on the metronome. Not so much on the Red Boat Jong form so far, but it’s definitely highlighted the parts where I fumble and shows me what to concentrate on.
5 Da drill and Siu Nim Tau parts learned so far are not giving me any problems, though I’m sure there’s a ton of room for improvement (isn’t there always?!).
To avoid being so noisy in here, I’ll probably roll up a weekly results and plans post until I get a billy partner.for now.

Congratulations Gary! That’s awesome to hear. “Today I will do what others won’t, so tomorrow I can do what others can’t” – Jerry Rice

Thank you! Many of these “youngsters” probably don’t know who Jerry Rice is Haha- He played back before there were iPhones 🙂

Unfortunately, I’m old enough to know who Jerry Rice is, and I’m old enough to know the quote! Saturday games were free to watch in England in the 80’s… as long as you didn’t mind staying up until 4am to see the final score. I got home from my bar job at minight, so became a huge fan. Go Raiders 😁

Glad to hear that, and Yes! Super fun watching the Raiders back then with the late Ken (The Snake) Stabler, playing my home team the San Diego Chargers- with the great Dan Fouts. Great Rivalry and great memories!

I was sick for most of last week, so didn’t practice very much at all :'(
I see there’s a new ‘Practice Log’ feature here though, so I’ll stop posting here, and fill daily logs instead from now on.

Heck yeah! Let’s do this! I’m on the EEK (Eyes elbows and knees) program. My Siu Nim Tao, Chum Kiu and Dummy to improve my EEK awareness. Mentors and mentees welcome. Let’s GOOOO!

Thanks Mark, nice to meet you!
No training on Tuesday for me, my dog was in the vet for surgery all day.
Yesterday, I introduced the 5 da’s to my Red Boat Ving Tsun study group and we all practiced solo and in pairs for half an hour. I only got 2 reps of the sections of Siu Lim Tau I’ve learned so far, and didn’t practice the dummy. Will make up for that tonight!
How did your practice go?

Last night after work, spent 30 mins on the online course daily practice: Mook Jong 010, first part of Siu Lim Tau, 5 Da’s. Still need to reference the videos to get through the dummy set, but everything else is flowing nicely!
How about you?

Likewise. As Sifu says “Seek the EEK” When doing your Siu Nim Tao and your dummy, the challenge is to stay mindful of where both of your elbows and both of your knees are headed. Even though the knees are stationary in SNT, imagine energy flowing through them forward. Your elbow behind your tan, wu and fook always mindful of forward- even when travelling backward. Picture this forward energy extending in front of you infinitely and literally imagine increasing its intensity from your eyes, elbows and knees.

So cool! And thanks for the extra info.
Yesterday, I finished week 5 of the online course with a 100% quiz grade; went through all the week 6 material, and spent an hour mostly making myself sad about not being able to keep up with the metronome on the Jong, but also some much more successful practice of all of Siu Lim Tau learned so far.
This week’s goal for me is to continue daily practice, and reach a solid performance with the metronome on the Jong.
Honestly, I also have trouble with the Jong form in my lineage having to stop here and there to gather my thoughts and remember where to go next. The metronome is a great training tool, and I plan to use it to smooth out that form too!

Gary, I love your commitment—and your honesty. That kind of reflection, even when it comes with a little frustration, is exactly what leads to true growth.
You’re doing something powerful here. This isn’t just about completing a course—it’s about reshaping the way you approach Wing Chun at its core. You’re embodying a new standard, a new depth.
The metronome work can be humbling, no doubt. But that’s part of the breakthrough—it forces refinement, precision, and presence. The fact that you’re applying it not just to this Jong but also to your previous form work says a lot about your mindset. That’s the kind of open-minded, constantly-evolving approach we live by in Dragon Family Wing Chun.

Hi Sifu Adam!
I appreciate your encouragement and kind words. Thank you so much.
And for anyone reading along, I highly recommend this metronome training method — even though I am still a ways off storming through the parts I know so far at 60bpm, it really helps to make progress obvious, where without the metronome little pauses are easy to ignore and there’s no feedback on how many beats I missed.

Hello Gary,
Finally found the email. Thanks for the guidance.
So, where do we begin?

Dragon Points
Hi Wayne. Details of how to proceed by Sifu Adam at the top of the thread.
My goals for this week are to follow the daily practice schedule for the online course. I’ll commit to at least 30mins per day rather than set reps, and aim to be competently performing Jong 010 at 100bpms, and doing daily SLT.
I already missed a day yesterday to start the week though. Watched and read all W8 lessons, and posted my cantonese cheat sheet for SLT term. But also packing for a trip to England tomorrow, and went to see Welsh boys Bullet for My Valentine in the valley on their 20 year anniversary tour for their first album… ran out of day before getting my daily solo practice in.
I’ll make it back up today though: with some solo training after lunch, and then leading a 2hr group class later.

Should we be able to see our practice logs after we submit them? I can’t find mine.
When we’re billied up, do we see whether our partner posted a practice log (just whether they posted, not what’s inside)?
-

Dragon Points
Yes, you’ll be able to see your practice logs after you submit them. Should have that capability in our next update to the community.
I hadn’t thought about being able to see if your Billy logged their practice. Will look into this capability as well. Thanks Gary!

Cool, thanks! I guess seeing that people you follow have posteda practice log from the timeline view would work well, without invading privacy?
